Notice of Non-Discrimination (Title IX Compliance Statement)

Detroit Business Institute (DBI) is committed to maintaining an educational environment free from discrimination, harassment, and retaliation.

Non-Discrimination Policy

DBI does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, age, religion, or any other characteristic protected by law in its educational programs, admissions, or activities.

Title IX Notice of Non-Discrimination

DBI does not discriminate on the basis of sex in any education program or activity it operates, as required by Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and 34 C.F.R. Part 106.

Sex discrimination includes but is not limited to:

  • Pregnancy and related conditions
  • Sexual harassment and sexual violence
  • Dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking

Pregnancy and Related Conditions

DBI ensures that students affected by pregnancy or related conditions are not excluded from participation in, denied the benefits of, or subjected to discrimination in any educational program or activity.

How DBI Supports Students

Students may request reasonable modifications, including:

  • Excused absences for pregnancy-related medical needs
  • Opportunities to make up missed coursework or clinical hours

All academic and clinical requirements must still be met.

Attendance and Documentation

DBI requires documented, verifiable proof for absences in order for such absences to be considered excused. This requirement applies to all students and all medical-related absences. Pregnancy-related absences are subject to the same documentation standards applied to other medical conditions. DBI does not impose additional or different documentation requirements based on pregnancy.

Clinical Participation and Safety

As a healthcare training institution, DBI maintains essential clinical and safety standards.

If a student has a medical condition, including pregnancy, that may impact the ability to safely perform required clinical functions, DBI may require medical documentation or clearance.

This requirement applies equally to all students with conditions affecting clinical participation.

Leave of Absence

DBI will not require a student to take a leave of absence due to pregnancy. Any leave must be voluntary.

Title IX Coordinator

The Title IX Coordinator is responsible for overseeing compliance with Title IX and addressing concerns related to sex discrimination.

Reporting Concerns

Any student or individual may report sex discrimination, including pregnancy-related concerns, at any time.

Reports may be made:

  • In person
  • By phone
  • By email

Reports may be directed to the School Title IX Coordinator, the Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights, ocr@ed.gov, https://ocrcas.ed.gov/ or both.

Grievance Process

DBI provides a prompt and equitable process for resolving complaints of sex discrimination.

Students should refer to the Student Complaint/Grievance Policy in the catalog or student handbook for full procedures.

Retaliation Prohibited

DBI prohibits retaliation against any individual for:

  • Reporting discrimination
  • Requesting accommodations
  • Participating in an investigation
